Why a disruption somewhere else can change your aircraft
Commercial aircraft normally operate a chain of flights rather than one isolated journey. The aircraft scheduled for your evening flight may have flown several sectors earlier that day. If one part of that sequence is delayed or disrupted, the problem can propagate through the rotation.
The airline then has several recovery choices. It may delay the next flight, cancel a service, reposition another aircraft or swap aircraft assignments between flights.
