Flight delays can happen even when the weather outside your airport looks completely clear because the aircraft at your gate is only one part of a much larger operating chain. The incoming aircraft may have arrived late, the crew may be delayed or unable to continue, maintenance may still be underway, baggage or fuelling may not be complete, the destination may have bad weather, or air traffic control may be restricting departures because of congestion elsewhere.

Why clear weather does not guarantee an on-time flight
A passenger sees the departure gate and the local weather. The airline and air-traffic system see the full operating chain: where the aircraft came from, which crew is assigned, what happened on earlier sectors, conditions at the destination, airspace restrictions and whether the aircraft can complete its turnaround in time.
The FAA has specifically addressed the common question of why a flight can be delayed on a sunny day. Weather affecting another part of the route or air-traffic network can still reduce capacity, change routing or delay the aircraft before it ever reaches your airport.

Late inbound aircraft: one of the simplest ways a delay spreads
Commercial aircraft normally operate several flights in sequence during the day. The same aircraft that is scheduled to take you to your destination may first need to arrive from another city.
The U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics uses the term late arriving aircraft when a previous flight operated by the same aircraft arrives late and causes the next flight to depart late.
That explains an important point: the visible delay on your flight may not be where the original problem started. The aircraft could be late because of weather, congestion, maintenance or another disruption several hours earlier.
What is a reactionary or knock-on delay?
EUROCONTROL uses the concept of reactionary delay for disruption that propagates from an earlier operation into later flights. The connection can involve the same aircraft, crew, passengers, baggage or cargo.
Imagine an aircraft scheduled to fly City A to City B, then City B to City C. If the first flight reaches City B 45 minutes late, the airline cannot simply erase those 45 minutes. The aircraft still has to unload, prepare, board and complete required checks before the next flight. Some of the original delay can therefore move into the City B to City C flight.
This is one reason delays can accumulate later in the day. A disruption in the morning can affect several later rotations unless the airline has enough schedule buffer or operational flexibility to recover.
Why other flights can leave while yours remains delayed
Seeing another aircraft depart from the same airport does not prove your flight should also be able to leave. Two flights can have completely different constraints.

Airport location alone therefore does not determine whether two flights face the same delay conditions.
Can air traffic control delay a flight that is otherwise ready?
Yes. Air traffic control and traffic-flow management exist to keep aircraft movements within safe and workable capacity. When traffic demand, runway availability, airspace constraints or weather reduce that capacity, some flights may have to wait.
An aircraft can be boarded, fuelled and technically ready while still being unable to depart at its originally planned time because the wider air-traffic system cannot accept it immediately.
This does not necessarily mean the airport itself is visibly crowded. The restriction may exist hundreds of kilometres away along the route or at the destination.
Can weather somewhere else delay your flight?
Yes. Weather does not have to be directly above your departure airport to affect the flight.
A storm can reduce arrival capacity at the destination. Thunderstorms can close or constrain commonly used routes. Strong weather earlier in the aircraft’s rotation can make the inbound aircraft late. By the time that aircraft reaches your airport, the sky around you may be clear but the schedule has already been disrupted.
This is also why a statement such as “the weather is fine here” cannot by itself establish that weather played no role in the delay.
How ground handling creates delays
An aircraft turnaround contains many jobs that have to come together before departure. Depending on the flight and airport, these can include passenger disembarkation, cleaning, catering, fuelling, baggage unloading and loading, cargo handling, boarding and pushback preparation.
EUROCONTROL delay analysis identifies passenger boarding, baggage handling, refuelling and other airline or ramp processes among causes capable of creating primary delay.
A problem in one task can affect the others. For example, late baggage loading may hold aircraft doors open even after most passengers are seated, while a fuelling or ground-equipment problem can delay the moment the aircraft is ready for pushback.
Can maintenance delay a flight?
Yes. Aircraft sometimes require technical inspection, troubleshooting or maintenance before departure. If a required condition is not satisfied, the airline cannot simply ignore it to protect the schedule.
A maintenance delay should not automatically be interpreted as proof that an aircraft was being operated unsafely. The delay can instead reflect the fact that the technical issue or required check is being addressed before the aircraft continues operating.
The exact technical reason for an individual flight cannot be established from general delay categories unless the airline or another authoritative source provides flight-specific information.
How crew availability can delay a flight
Aircraft are not the only resources moving through an airline network. Pilots and cabin crew also operate scheduled sequences and are subject to duty and rest requirements.
If an earlier flight arrives late, the crew scheduled for your flight may also arrive late. In some situations an airline may need another crew because continuing would exceed applicable duty limits.
The exact limits depend on the jurisdiction, regulator and operating circumstances, so there is no single universal number that should be applied to every airline. The important passenger-facing point is that an aircraft can be physically ready while the legally usable crew is not.
Why the delay reason you see may not be the original cause
A status such as “late arriving aircraft” often describes the immediate reason your current flight cannot leave on time. It does not necessarily explain why that aircraft became late in the first place.
The previous flight may itself have been delayed by bad weather, an ATC restriction, maintenance, congestion or another operational problem. The visible status therefore may describe one link in the chain rather than the root cause.
This distinction matters when passengers are trying to understand why the explanation appears inconsistent with what they can see around them.
Why delays can get worse later in the day
Airline schedules contain some recovery time, but it is not unlimited. When an early flight is delayed, the aircraft and sometimes the crew can reach every later assignment behind schedule.
If enough time exists between flights, part of that delay may be recovered. If the schedule is tight, the disruption can continue into the afternoon or evening. EUROCONTROL’s analysis of reactionary delay reflects this network-propagation effect.
That is why an evening passenger can experience the consequence of an operational problem that occurred much earlier in the day.
What passengers can check
If a delay is unexplained, start with the airline’s current flight-status information. Where available, check whether the aircraft operating your flight is arriving from another sector, and review official departure-airport, destination-airport or air-traffic-system status information.
Those checks can help distinguish a local turnaround problem from a broader airport or network disruption, but they still may not reveal the exact root cause. Airlines and aviation authorities can have more operational information than is exposed to passengers in real time.
The simplest way to understand flight delays
Think of a commercial flight as part of a chain rather than an isolated departure.
Earlier disruption → inbound aircraft or crew → turnaround → airport or ATC constraint → your departure → later flights.
A problem anywhere along that sequence can eventually appear as a delay at your gate. That is why a flight can be late while the weather is clear, the terminal looks normal and aircraft at neighbouring gates are still departing.
